There are two requirements to become a 501st Legion member:

1) You must personally own a high quality (movie accurate or better) Imperial Star Wars costume and be willing to participate in public events and other activities.

2) You must be at least 18 years of age. (If you are under 18, please check out the Galactic Academy, a group created for our younger cadets. If you are looking to create a Jedi, X-wing pilot or other hero character visit the Rebel Legion.)

How To Join Bast Alpha Garrison

There are no fees and the only requirements pertain to age and costume quality. The 501st is simply a fun, all-volunteer group of fans representing characters from the Star Wars saga.

1) Decide on your costume

You can find a list of currently recognized costumes in the visual guides section of the main 501st Legion website.

2) Join your costume detachment forum

Characters which are closely related, those having very similar aspects or roles within the universe, are grouped into Detachments. Click here to see a list of all the Detachments. When you find one you are interested in, click the “Visual Guide” link that is in red.

The visual guide (CRL or Costume Reference Library) for that costume will show up, along with a link to the detachment website/forums. Join the forum that relates to your costume and start asking questions! You need a costume before you can join and the detachment website is the best place to learn how to make your costume.

This is the 1st forum you need to sign up on.

3) Join the Bast Alpha Garrison forum

We are the garrison for the entire state of Louisiana. We welcome “wranglers” and non-costumed volunteers at our events. You are welcome to join us, help out, meet some members and see our costumes up close while you are working on your costume.

Click here and register on our forum, which is where all the member stuff happens. Introduce yourself in the “Future Members Area.”

This is the 2nd forum you need to sign up on.

STEP 4: Take your approval photos & email them to the GML

Once your costume is ready, it must be approved by the Garrison Member Liaison, aka GML.

To do this, you should take several high quality photos of your costume. Take them from the front, back, both sides, with your hands up and if you wear a bucket (a helmet) take one without a bucket on.

Use good lighting, and make sure there is a plain (as possible) background behind you. Once you have your approval pictures ready, you can send them to the GML, David White david @ evilpenguinfilms.com .

You will now be communicating directly with the GML. The GML staff will inform you if your costume is approved or not. If it isn’t, they will let you know why.

Once your GML confirms that your suit is complete and valid for membership, fill out the online application.

When your application is approved, you will receive confirmation via e-mail. Your Legion ID will be assigned and your record marked as “ACTIVE” in the 501st Legion member database. Please note that the 501st is an all-volunteer organization and the application may take several weeks to review.

STEP 5: Join the 501st Forums

Now that you have your screen accurate costume made and ready to go, you’ll want to sign up on the 501st Legion website forums.

This is the 3rd forum you need to sign up on.

So in summary, you will be part of 3 different forums:

  • Detachment Forum: Relates to your costume and is available to those costume builders only.
  • Garrison Forum: Where local events are posted at that you can sign up for and troop at. Usually available to only garrison members.
  • 501st Legion Forums: Where legion news is posted, elections and more. This is available to all 501st legion members.

Start Trooping!

Congratulations! You’ve made it to the fun part: Trooping!

We strongly recommend that you take some time and read the Trooper Survival Guide. This is the definitive guide to being a 501st member, and should help you get familiar with all the things you need to know.
